In an effort to combat misinformation and disinformation, over twenty (20) members of the Civil Servant Association of Liberia, including civil servants with disabilities, have been equipped with vital fact-checking skills through a specialized training conducted by Campaigners Against Misinformation and Disinformation in Liberia (CAMDL).
The training, held at the Civil Servant Association of Liberia Office in Saye Town, Monrovia, on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, focused on empowering civil servants with practical tools to verify online information before sharing it. Participants were introduced to Scam Doc and Google Reverse Image Search, two key digital tools that enable users to detect misleading or false information.
Speaking at the training, Taweh Johnson, Executive Director of CAMDL, emphasized the importance of equipping civil servants with fact-checking skills, particularly as Liberia faces increasing challenges posed by misinformation.
“This initiative empowers civil servants to recognize and counter false information. They, too, can be vulnerable to misinformation, and by equipping them with verification skills, we contribute to maintaining the integrity of Liberia’s information landscape,” Johnson stated.
The training was organized in observance of International Fact-Checking Day, a global event celebrated annually on April 2nd to recognize the critical role of fact-checkers in promoting accurate information. Johnson highlighted that misinformation can easily spread among civil servants, impacting decision-making and public trust in institutions. By providing these skills, CAMDL aims to enhance Liberia’s resilience against the spread of falsehoods.
Participants expressed gratitude to CAMDL for organizing the training and committed to passing on their newly acquired skills to colleagues and community members.
“I never knew there were such tools to check if an image or website was fake. Now I feel more confident in verifying information before sharing it,” said one of the participants.
The training aligns with CAMDL’s broader mission to promote responsible information-sharing and sustain national peace by educating citizens on fact-checking techniques. The organization envisions a Liberia where citizens actively contribute to credible and reliable information dissemination.
As misinformation continues to pose a challenge in various sectors, initiatives like this remain crucial in ensuring that individuals, particularly those in public service, are equipped to discern truth from falsehood.
