MONROVIA — Former President of the Press Union of Liberia, Charles B. Coffey Jr., has called on Liberians and political actors across the nation to remain calm, patriotic, and steadfast in their respect for the rule of law as the government intensifies its campaign against harmful drugs and prosecutes alleged traffickers.
Coffey emphasized that the growing drug crisis represents a critical national concern that demands collective responsibility and institutional support, rather than political confrontation, public pressure, or premature judgment. He appealed to political organizations and individuals with differing perspectives on ongoing prosecutions to give the courts and law enforcement agencies the space needed to execute their constitutional duties without interference.
Emphasizing the principle of constitutional protections, Coffey stressed that allegations of criminal conduct must be resolved through due process, noting that no individual should face conviction in the court of public opinion before a competent judicial body delivers its verdict. Coffey, who is currently pursuing legal studies at the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law at the University of Liberia, voiced full confidence in the capacity of the legal system to deliver fair outcomes.
He pointed to the judiciary as an indispensable pillar of the Republic and urged judges, attorneys, and legal professionals to remain steadfast in upholding integrity, impartiality, and professional ethics. At the same time, Coffey cautioned political commentators and public figures against issuing inflammatory statements or drawing early conclusions regarding matters actively before the courts.
While acknowledging that political disagreement is a healthy component of a functioning democracy, Coffey noted that opposition to government policies or legal proceedings must always remain peaceful and operate strictly within statutory boundaries. True patriotism, he stated, does not demand uniform opinion, but rather a shared commitment to preserving national peace and respecting public institutions even during times of political friction.
Coffey urged all Liberians to stand behind legitimate state and security initiatives designed to eliminate harmful drugs while ensuring that the constitutional rights of the accused are fully safeguarded. He advocated treating the anti-drug campaign as a unified national objective rather than a political battleground, calling for broad collaboration among civil society, media organizations, religious bodies, traditional authorities, and political leaders.
Justice is most effectively served when legal principles and factual evidence dictate judicial outcomes rather than popular sentiment. Coffey concluded with a final appeal for national calm, urging citizens to trust the judicial process to determine the facts and enforce the law in all pending matters.
