Deputy Chief Clerk Commicks Chea Dies After Collapsing During House Session

MONROVIA – Mr. Commicks Chea, Deputy Chief Clerk of the House of Representatives, has died following a sudden medical emergency during a legislative session. Chea passed away at midnight on Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the St. Joseph’s Catholic Hospital in Congo Town, where he had been receiving treatment after collapsing on the House floor during the plenary session held Thursday, May 29.

His unexpected death has sent shockwaves across the Legislature, where he was known for his unwavering dedication, professionalism, and deep-rooted knowledge of parliamentary affairs. Chea had been a longtime figure within the Capitol Building, earning respect from lawmakers and staff for his consistent commitment to duty and mastery of legislative procedures.

Lovingly referred to by many as “Oldman,” Chea’s steady presence and institutional memory made him a trusted figure in the House. He played a critical role during several key periods of transition, including taking on the responsibilities of Acting Deputy Chief Clerk after the death of Hon. Saifu Geplay. His leadership during that interim phase earned him the confidence of the Legislature, culminating in his official election as Deputy Chief Clerk in January 2024.

Most recently, during a contentious standoff in the Legislature, Chea sided with the Majority Bloc to keep the Secretariat operational amid uncertainty. His efforts ensured that the House continued to function despite the absence of his immediate supervisor, Chief Clerk Madam Mildred Sayon, who reported being unwell at the time.

Chea’s passing marks the end of a distinguished career in public service. Tributes are already pouring in from across the political spectrum, as the Legislature mourns the loss of a man many viewed as a stabilizing force in the heart of Liberia’s legislative body.
