PAYNESVILLE – Police in King Gray, District #6, have begun making arrests following widespread protests staged by disadvantaged youths demanding action against drug dealers in the community. The demonstrations, which drew hundreds of youths to the King Gray and SKD premises early Wednesday morning, were marked by chants of “We don’t want to smoke again. We don’t want to get high again,” as protesters called on the government to remove drugs from the streets.
In response, officers from the Liberia National Police (LNP) Support Unit, acting in coordination with local citizens, conducted a raid at the King Gray Graveyard, where they arrested dozens of youths known locally as “zogos,” along with individuals suspected of selling drugs. Authorities did not provide an official reason for the arrests.
During the operation, both male and female detainees had their heads shaved. Community members present participated in the head-shaving, a move that has drawn speculation among locals. Some observers believe the act was intended to mark the detainees and make them easily identifiable, while others argue it may have been intended as a form of public shaming.
The arrests highlight ongoing tensions in Paynesville, where disadvantaged youths have repeatedly protested against drug abuse and the presence of dealers in their neighborhoods. Police officials have yet to issue a formal statement clarifying the head-shaving or detailing further steps in addressing drug-related activities in King Gray.
The operation underscores the growing collaboration between law enforcement and local communities in combating drug abuse, though questions remain about the legality and ethics of some measures used during arrests. Citizens continue to call for transparent action to ensure that justice is served while protecting the rights and dignity of those involved.
