MONROVIA – Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, the Director-General of Liberia’s National Public Health Institute (NPHIL), is once again receiving praise for his groundbreaking contributions to public health, both in Liberia and across the African continent. In a post shared on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, by Dr. Anderson Flomo, Jr., Deputy Director for Environmental and Occupational Health at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Nyan was hailed as a national asset and a global public health innovator.
Dr. Flomo, who is also a Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) Fellow at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), wrote on his official LinkedIn page that Dr. Nyan’s impact on healthcare systems spans invention, emergency response, and leadership. “From inventing the ‘NYAN’s TEST’, an isothermal, multiplex diagnostic tool capable of rapidly detecting 3 to 7 infectious agents such as Hepatitis, Malaria, Zika, and HIV, to heading the Diaspora Liberian Emergency Response Task Force during the 2014 Ebola outbreak, and now leading NPHIL, his work has been instrumental,” Flomo stated.
He further highlighted that under Dr. Nyan’s leadership, NPHIL has been recognized as an Africa CDC Regional Center of Excellence, a designation that underscores the institution’s growing reputation for advancing disease surveillance, research, and emergency preparedness. This recognition places Liberia at the forefront of continental efforts to strengthen public health systems and respond to emerging threats, including pandemics, climate-related health risks, and antimicrobial resistance.
“It’s nice catching up, and many thanks for all you do, DG. Looking forward to future collaborations,” Dr. Flomo concluded, referring to Dr. Nyan by his official title as Director-General.
Dr. Dougbeh Nyan, a U.S.-trained biomedical scientist and infectious disease expert, is well-known in Liberia for his outspoken stance on health system reform, accountability, and evidence-based policymaking. His invention, the NYAN’s TEST, has earned international accolades for its speed and versatility in detecting multiple pathogens simultaneously, especially in resource-limited settings. The test has been described as a potential game-changer in the rapid diagnosis and containment of infectious diseases in Africa.
This public commendation comes at a time when Liberia continues to grapple with significant public health challenges, including outbreaks of Mpox, malaria, and Lassa fever, as well as ongoing post-pandemic recovery efforts. Dr. Nyan’s leadership at NPHIL has renewed hope among health professionals who are striving for stronger institutions and modern tools to confront these persistent threats.
As Liberia’s health sector works to improve its infrastructure, training, and data systems, Dr. Nyan’s blend of innovation and advocacy is seen as central to shaping the country’s future. The praise from Dr. Flomo, a prominent voice in the region’s climate and health discussions, further reinforces the collaborative spirit needed to drive progress in public health.
With continued partnerships between NPHIL, Africa CDC, and global health institutions, experts say Liberia is well-positioned to become a hub for public health innovation and resilience in West Africa.
