MARGIBI COUNTY – Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), has disclosed that the past weekend was fully dedicated to the review and discussion of Mpox detection data, following the testing of a considerable number of backlog specimens at the National Reference Laboratory in Margibi County.
According to Dr. Nyan, the results from the weekend’s diagnostic work are “interesting and plausible,” signaling a step forward in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to monitor and curb the spread of the viral infection. He commended the hard work of the institute’s young laboratory scientists, stating, “Thanks to a dedicated team of young Laboratory Scientists at the National Public Health Institute of Liberia-NPHIL.”
It can be recalled that Dr. Nyan spent the weekend personally overseeing Mpox diagnostic operations as part of Liberia’s national outbreak response strategy. Speaking to Smart News Liberia following the operations on Saturday, June 28, 2025, he remarked, “Performing Mpox diagnostics throughout this weekend at the National Reference Laboratory of NPHIL along with our junior scientists was both impressive and rewarding.”
Dr. Nyan’s leadership in the field has been lauded by public health stakeholders, especially amid growing concerns about the re-emergence of Mpox in the region. His weekend initiative highlights a hands-on approach to ensuring rigorous testing, accurate data, and a science-driven response to infectious disease outbreaks in the country.
He concluded his weekend reflection with a renewed call for vigilance and public cooperation, emphasizing the importance of continued testing and awareness. The message was shared with hashtags including #StopMpox, #OutbreakResponse, #PublicHealthSafety, and #NPHIL.
