The former Speaker of the House of Representatives and Grand Kru County District #2 Representative Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa has accused the Unity Party government of failure and deception revealing that well-meaning Liberians are languishing in untold suffering and abject poverty.
According to Rep. Koffa, the latest documented World Bank Poverty Assessment on Liberia has confirmed what every Liberian already knows, that under President Boakai’s Unity Party administration, poverty has worsened to extreme levels, with families unable to afford a single daily meal, unable to pay house rent, unable to access basic health care, and unable to send their children to school.
Fonati added, “While Liberians cry for hunger and survival, the Unity Party government shamelessly brags about collecting over US$1.2 billion in national revenue, a revenue that has no impact on the lives of the ordinary people.”
The former Speaker questioned, “Where is the billion dollars going? The Unity Party government is collecting billions but Liberians are dying in poverty.” Rep. Koffa vowed to renew his call for a US$25 million Social Welfare Fund to directly assist Liberians undergoing extreme poverty with rent, tuition, and emergency health care, a pro-people initiative he said the Unity Party has ignored because it has no regard for the suffering masses.
The Grand Kru lawmaker warned that the UP government must desist from its empty bragging about billion-dollar budgets when its own citizens, documented by the World Bank, are living in extreme poverty and cannot afford basic necessities for survival.
