Ex-TWP Standard Bearer Calls for Investigation Into Boakai’s Flight Incident | News

Former Standard Bearer of the Grand True Whig Party (TWP), Eric Olson, has called for a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the recent incident involving the presidential aircraft transporting President Joseph N. Boakai, Sr., describing the episode as a “grave threat to national stability and leadership safety.”

The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) confirmed that on Thursday, May 29, 2025, the presidential aircraft experienced a tyre burst upon landing, which temporarily rendered it immobile on the active runway. Normal operations resumed only after the removal of a private aircraft from the runway, according to an official statement from the LAA.

However, the explanation has not satisfied many observers, especially Olson, who issued a strongly worded statement on Saturday, warning that the incident should not be treated as a routine technical malfunction.

“This alarming incident must be viewed with the utmost seriousness,” Olson stated. “I am deeply disappointed with the Liberia Airport Authority’s response, which appears to lack the transparency necessary to instill public confidence. Such a technical malfunction cannot be dismissed as an isolated issue; it threatens our national stability and the safety of our leaders.”

Olson emphasized that a full legislative investigation is necessary to restore public trust and safeguard national security.

“We demand a full, legislative investigation into this matter,” he declared.

“The ownership, maintenance, repairs, and service records of the aircraft must be disclosed without delay. Every government agency involved in its chartering and operation must be held accountable.”

The former TWP political leader stressed that beyond the immediate danger, the incident reflects a larger systemic vulnerability in Liberia’s aviation and security infrastructure.

“Our nation’s security depends on the integrity of our transportation systems, and the government must demonstrate unwavering commitment to safeguarding our leadership and people,” Olson warned.

He further criticized what he described as lax standards and oversight in aviation management, arguing that the incident must serve as a wake-up call for reform.

“This incident exposes a systemic vulnerability that calls for urgent reform and oversight within our aviation sector,” Olson stated.

“We cannot afford any lapses when it comes to the safety of our President, our government officials, and our citizens.”

Olson concluded his statement by urging Liberia’s lawmakers to treat the situation with the seriousness it deserves and to act in the interest of transparency, national sovereignty, and stability.

“I urge our lawmakers to prioritize this investigation and ensure full transparency,” he said. “The future of Liberia depends on accountability at every level of governance. We must uphold the principles of transparency and integrity to secure our nation’s sovereignty and stability.”
