Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first democratically elected female head of state, has been awarded the “Honorary Leadership Award” by the Young Political Leadership School Africa (YPLS Africa). The award recognizes her decades-long contributions to democracy, peace, and women’s empowerment across the continent.
The award was presented at Sirleaf’s Monrovia residence by Alphia F. Kemokai, YPLS Africa’s Program Manager, who called her “a true trailblazer whose exemplary leadership continues to inspire young leaders.” Kemokai highlighted Sirleaf’s early support for the program, noting that she was the first sitting president to endorse it in 2016.
“You started this journey with us, you inspired us a lot, and today, as we celebrate almost a decade of impact, it is fitting to honor you for standing with us since the beginning,” Kemokai stated.
YPLS Africa, a flagship initiative of Naymote Partners for Democratic Development, has trained over 1,200 emerging leaders from 14 African countries. At least 50 alumni now hold government positions in Liberia, Nigeria, Cameroon, and Namibia.
The award’s inscription celebrates Sirleaf’s “historic leadership as Africa’s first elected female president, unwavering commitment to democracy, peace, and women’s empowerment, and enduring legacy of inspiring ethical and transformative leadership across the continent.”
In her response, Sirleaf expressed her gratitude and emphasized the importance of youth leadership. “It is always an appreciation when one is recognized by young people,” she said. “We’re passing the baton to you, and we expect that you will live up to the requirements of leadership: commitment, dedication, integrity, and respect.”
She also praised YPLS Africa’s progress, urging the institution to remain bold, innovative, and confident in its mission to nurture transformative leaders. “I am glad to be part of Naymote’s progress, and I hope you will continue to be an institution that inspires people,” she added.
YPLS Africa has become one of the continent’s leading youth leadership programs, equipping participants with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to transform governance in Africa. By honoring Sirleaf, the organization reaffirms its mission to raise a new generation of accountable, ethical, and visionary leaders for Africa’s democratic future.
