MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Emmanuel D. Gonquoi, the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters of Liberia (EFFL), has made a significant political statement that suggests he may be preparing to take on a larger role in Liberia’s 2029 presidential election.
This move could indicate a potential split from the Unity Party and President Joseph Nyuma Boakai.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Gonquoi referred to the upcoming election as a pivotal moment in Liberia’s political landscape, advocating for a transformation in the country’s politics and leadership.
“2029 will never be treated like previous election years because it’s going to be a consequential year in our political history,” Gonquoi wrote.
He added that it will be, “A year of reinventing Liberian politics and leadership. A year service not disservice. A year [of] honesty not dishonesty. EFFL.”
While he did not formally announce his candidacy for president, the tone of his message suggests he is positioning himself politically, especially given his long-standing ties to President Boakai and the Unity Party.
Gonquoi has long been seen as a political protégé of Boakai, a connection that dates back to the 2017 presidential election when Boakai was the Unity Party’s candidate. This relationship has significantly shaped Gonquoi’s public political persona.
However, his recent message seems to highlight a desire for independent leadership, a political transformation, and a departure from what he views as the failures of Liberia’s traditional political system.
