MONROVIA – The scale of the narcotics enterprise Liberian authorities say they have uncovered at Duazon is without precedent in this country’s experience, and the disclosures made Wednesday by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice have turned what began as a single seizure into a national security emergency. Nearly four thousand kilograms of suspected cocaine, carrying an estimated street value of more than US$317 million, were recovered from a residence in the VOA Community along the Roberts International Airport Highway. MONROVIA – The Ministry of Justice on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, placed before the Liberian public the most detailed account yet of what it describes as an organized, sophisticated, complex and well-funded narcotics trafficking network operating on Liberian soil. In a statement delivered on behalf of the Joint National Security Investigative Task Force, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice confirmed the seizure of approximately 3,971 kilograms of processed plates of suspected cocaine at a residence in the VOA Community, Duazon, along the Roberts International Airport Highway in Margibi County.
The quantity alone marks the operation as the largest narcotics interdiction ever announced by the Liberian state. But it is the accompanying disclosure about the age and reach of the network, rather than the tonnage, that has given the announcement its weight.
How The Trail Led To Duazon
The breakthrough, according to the statement, did not come by accident. On Monday, July 20, 2026, acting on information developed in the course of an ongoing investigation, the Task Force arrested and detained several persons of interest for questioning in furtherance of that investigation.
Information obtained through continued investigative and intelligence efforts then pointed authorities toward the Duazon premises. On Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at approximately 9:00 a.m., a joint team executed a duly authorized search-and-seizure warrant on the property and recovered the suspected consignment, which has since been secured as evidence and forwarded for appropriate scientific examination.
The Value Of The Haul
The Ministry places the estimated street value of the seized substances at approximately US$317,680,000. Placed against the size of Liberia’s annual national budget, the figure describes a shadow economy operating in parallel with, and in defiance of, the lawful one.
The seizure also dwarfs the consignment intercepted on June 8, 2026, which had until Wednesday stood as the reference point in the public mind. What the Duazon operation suggests is that the June interception was not an isolated incident but a fragment of a far larger enterprise.
Equipment That Tells Its Own Story
Beyond the suspected narcotics, investigators recovered a collection of items whose ordinary uses sit uneasily beside one another: diving suits, a firearm, GPS tracking devices, a drone, Starlink satellite internet equipment, and other materials. All have been secured and are being examined to determine their purpose and potential connection to the suspected trafficking operation.
Investigators have not yet stated what the equipment establishes, and the Ministry has been careful to describe the examination as ongoing. The inventory nonetheless raises questions about maritime handling, independent tracking and communications capacity that lie beyond the reach of national telecommunications infrastructure.
Two Foreigners In Custody
Two foreign nationals were taken into custody in connection with the seizure and are assisting investigators. One is identified as a Serbian national and the other as holding dual Colombian and Spanish nationality.
Their names are being withheld at this stage, the Ministry said, to protect the integrity of the investigation and ongoing investigative activities. Both remain persons of interest rather than charged defendants, and the Ministry has stressed that their detention does not constitute a finding of criminal responsibility.
A Network Six Years In Place
The single most consequential line in Wednesday’s statement was not about quantity or value. The investigation, the Ministry said, has generated significant evidentiary leads and revealed an organized, sophisticated, complex and well-funded narcotics trafficking network that may have been operating in Liberia for more than six years.
That admission carries implications that extend well beyond the two men now in custody. A network of that duration requires shelter, and shelter of that duration requires either sustained institutional failure or sustained institutional cooperation. Investigators say they are examining possible domestic and international networks, logistical arrangements, financial transactions, and any other forms of facilitation associated with the suspected shipment.
Property And Vehicle Forfeited
Because the Duazon premises were used in the commission of offenses under the Amended Controlled Drug and Substance Act of 2023, the property will be confiscated and forfeited in favor of the Government of Liberia as provided under the Act. The vehicle used to transport the drugs will be forfeited on the same authority.
The Task Force has further been instructed to take similar action against the residence of Mr. Paul King, located at V.P. Road, where the drugs seized on June 8, 2026, were stored, collected and transported to the Roberts International Airport. The instruction formally links the two seizures in the eyes of the state.
Caution Against Speculation
The Ministry cautioned the public against speculation regarding the identities or culpability of individuals who have not been formally charged. Persons currently being questioned or investigated are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in accordance with law.
Information will be released, the statement said, only when it can be verified and when disclosure will not compromise ongoing investigative activities or future prosecution. The seized substances and other items of evidence are being maintained under established evidence-management and chain-of-custody procedures.
A Charge To The Citizenry
In a passage unusual for a prosecutorial statement, the Ministry turned from the courtroom to the community. Narcotics trafficking, it argued, corrodes institutions, corrupts public systems and destroys the young, and every citizen therefore has cause to look around his or her own neighborhood and workplace.
Citizens were urged to weigh the visible wealth of relatives, friends, acquaintances and co-workers against known sources of income, and to question what cannot be explained. Anyone holding credible information was encouraged to bring it forward through the appropriate security authorities, with the Ministry stating that measures are in place to allow witnesses to come forward without fear of intimidation, retaliation or interference.
What Comes Next
The investigation remains active and is examining the origin, ownership, transportation method and intended destination of the seized substances, as well as the identities and roles of all persons who may be connected to the operation. Cooperation with national and international law-enforcement partners will be pursued where necessary to identify additional persons, networks or jurisdictions.
Further information regarding laboratory findings, formal charges and additional arrests will be released as the investigation progresses and when legally appropriate. The Ministry closed with the assurance that no individual, regardless of nationality, position, status, influence or affiliation, will be shielded from accountability where the evidence establishes criminal responsibility.
