Gov’t Allocates $US150,000 For Safe Homes in Push to Strengthen SGBV

By Lewis S. Teh

Monrovia, April 22, 2026. Women’s rights groups in Liberia are welcoming a new $US150,000 allocation toward safe homes for survivors of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), calling it a critical step in building survivor-centered support nationwide.

The Feminist Alliance and a coalition of civil society organizations commended Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, alongside the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection, for creating space for CSOs in national budget advocacy.

Safe homes provide survivors with immediate shelter, psychosocial support, and access to justice pathways.

The funding addresses urgent gaps in immediate protection and secure shelter for survivors nationwide.

It follows years of budget analyses by the Feminist Alliance showing limited government financing, heavy reliance on donor support, and underinvestment in SGBV services between 2019 and 2025.

The collaboration reflects growing recognition of civil society’s role in shaping national policy and budget decisions.

The Alliance emphasized that $150,000 is an initial step and urged the National Legislature to approve the supplemental budget without delay to ensure funds reach survivors quickly. The group also called for transparent disbursement, sustained domestic financing, dedicated SGBV budget lines across ministries, and a coordinated sector-wide response.

The Feminist Alliance said it remains committed to working with both the Executive and Legislature to ensure national budgets reflect the needs of women and girls in Liberia.
