MONROVIA — Grand Kru County has officially unveiled its soccer, kickball and basketball teams ahead of the 2026-27 National County Sports Meet, as the county intensifies preparations for the upcoming competition.

The unveiling ceremony, held Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, at Monrovia City Hall, was accompanied by a fundraising drive to mobilize financial and moral support for the county’s participation.

Speaking at the event, Steering Committee Chairman J. Cyrus Seygbe called on Grand Kru citizens at home and abroad to unite behind the county’s teams and contribute to their preparations.

Seygbe also urged citizens to take an active interest in the county’s sporting activities, particularly as Grand Kru prepares to host Bomi and Margibi counties during the preliminary rounds.

Meanwhile, Grand Kru County Legislative Caucus member Sen. Nunnuie T.H. Bartekwa called on citizens to put aside political differences and rally behind the teams.

Bartekwa said the competition offers Grand Kru residents a chance to demonstrate unity, solidarity, and a shared commitment to success at the national level.

For his part, Grand Kru County District No. 2 Rep. J. Fonati Koffa, a former speaker of the House of Representatives, praised Seygbe and members of the steering committee for their mobilization efforts and preparations.

Koffa also said former President George Weah had promised to visit and support the county’s teams after completing his FIFA assignment and returning to Liberia.

Also speaking on behalf of Grand Kru County Sen. Albert T. Chie, Chief of Office Staff Attorney Lavoisier Julu reaffirmed the senator’s commitment to supporting the teams.

Julu stressed the importance of supporting the players, particularly as Grand Kru prepares to host preliminary-round matches on its home soil for the first time in several decades.

The unveiling and fundraising activities form part of Grand Kru’s broader preparations for the 2026-27 tournament.

The county will host Bomi and Margibi in the preliminary rounds and is competing under the theme “Champions by Heart and Victors of Destiny,” underscoring its commitment to unity and the pursuit of national honors. The official opening ceremony of the 2026-2027 National County Sports Meet will now take place in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, after Lofa County failed to meet the hosting deadline.
