GSA Limits Government Vehicle Purchases to $60,000, Bans Certain Diesel Engines – Global News Network Liberia

Monrovia, Liberia – February 20, 2025 – The General Services Agency (GSA) has announced a new policy capping government vehicle purchases at USD 60,000.  GSA Director General Galakpai W. Kortimal made the announcement at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism’s press briefing, stating that the move aims to promote cost-effective asset management and curb excessive spending.

“All government agencies must consult the GSA before acquiring new vehicles,” Director Kortimal emphasized, highlighting the government’s commitment to financial discipline. He noted that high-priced vehicles acquired by previous administrations often became inoperable, resulting in substantial financial losses.

The GSA has also introduced two new administrative regulations, effective February 19, 2025:

 * Ban on Electronic Nozzle Vehicles (GSA/AR-2025/002): Government agencies are prohibited from purchasing electronically controlled diesel engine vehicles due to their history of poor performance.

 * Restrictions on Government Vehicles Leaving the Country: No government vehicle is allowed to exit Liberia without prior written approval from the GSA Director General.

Security agencies and other government institutions are mandated to enforce these measures to prevent unauthorized use of state assets. The GSA has deployed inspectors across all 15 counties, with larger counties receiving additional personnel for enhanced oversight.  As a demonstration of adherence to the new regulations, the National Oil Company of Liberia (NOCAL) recently returned a government vehicle to its designated agency.

Director Kortimal warned that any public official violating these policies will face administrative action. “Government properties should be used in the best interest of the country. We are working with the Liberia Immigration Service to ensure proper asset management,” he asserted.  These measures are part of the government’s broader push for transparency, accountability, and responsible asset management.
