GSA Warns Officials Against Using Govt Plates on Unauthorized Vehicles

By Kruah Thompson

Monrovia, May 11, 2026 – The Deputy Director for Operations at the General Services Agency (GSA), Robert Wilson, has warned government officials and employees against placing official government license plates on unauthorized vehicles, cautioning that violators risk having their vehicles impounded.

Speaking at a recent news conference, Wilson announced that the GSA will soon deploy a special enforcement team nationwide to identify and impound vehicles illegally displaying government plates. He emphasized that any vehicle found in violation will be seized, and the owner will be required to pay towing fees and fulfill all legal registration requirements before being issued a new government plate.

“A team will soon be deployed in the field to implement this mandate,” Wilson stated. “We know what to look for when we see a vehicle coming. When a car is found in violation, it will be impounded, and the official responsible will be required to go to the GSA, pay towing fees, ensure the vehicle is properly registered, and obtain a new plate.”

Recently, the government distributed newly commissioned license plates to officials who use their private vehicles for official duties. Special stickers were also issued to help identify authorized vehicles and distinguish them from those illegally using government plates.

However, Wilson revealed that members of the Liberian National Legislature rejected the new plates during distribution, arguing that the design and color scheme were inappropriate. As a result, lawmakers may be temporarily excluded from the enforcement process until the disagreement is resolved.

Wilson described the unauthorized use of government plates as a violation of official policy. He noted that the police have already been notified, and authorities responsible for producing the plates have been placed on standby ahead of the upcoming enforcement operation.
