HARPER, MARYLAND COUNTY – Early Tuesday morning, September 9, 2025, students of the Harper Demonstration School staged a protest over the deteriorating condition of their school building, drawing attention to the urgent need for repairs. The demonstration was triggered by reports that some county officials had instructed a private contractor to halt ongoing renovation work, citing plans for the government to take over the project.
The protest sparked a series of interventions from the office of the Maryland County Superintendent, which ultimately helped calm tensions and restore order. Dorbor Bedell, the contractor who initiated the renovation prior to its temporary suspension, confirmed that work would resume immediately.
“I am fully committed to renovating the Harper Demonstration School building, and work is expected to restart tomorrow,” Bedell said. He explained that the Superintendent had recommended raising the roof, which is currently low and prone to leaking, and affirmed his agreement with the suggestion.
Bedell also appealed to students and parents for patience during the renovation process, expressing gratitude to Superintendent Henry Cole for his guidance and involvement in ensuring the project meets safety and quality standards.
The swift resumption of renovation works is expected to address the long-standing infrastructural issues at Harper Demonstration School, providing students with a safer and more conducive learning environment. The episode highlights the challenges faced by educational institutions in Maryland County and underscores the importance of coordinated efforts between private contributors and local government authorities.
