Pleebo, Maryland County – February 9, 2025 – The representative of Pleebo Sodoken District #2, Hon. Anthony F. Williams, arrived in the district on Saturday, February 8, 2025, to a hero’s welcome from a crowd of enthusiastic residents, supporters, and well-wishers. The streets were alive with excitement as citizens turned out to greet their representative following his return to Pleebo Sodoken District after several months in the capital.
The following day, Sunday, February 9, Hon. Williams, joined by the Mayor of Pleebo City, Larry G. Geekor, and other key figures, attended a Thanksgiving Service at the Charity Center AG Church in Pleebo City. During the service, Hon. Williams shared an inspiring message based on the biblical story of Lazarus, drawing parallels between the resurrection of Lazarus and his mission to “resurrect” Pleebo Sodoken District. He expressed that the Thanksgiving service was an opportunity to commit his work to God and to thank the church for its role in his life.
Later that day, at around 2 p.m., Representative Williams proceeded to the Pleebo City Hall for a program designed to appreciate the district’s residents for electing him as their representative. The event also aimed to provide a comprehensive report on his activities over the past 10 months of his six-year term, to promote unity within the community, and to present various items to the district.
The program was well-attended by representatives from several prominent institutions, including the Cavalla Rubber Plantation and Maryland Oil Palm Plantation (CRC/MOPP), Golden-SIFCA, the Disabled Community, the National Teachers Association of Liberia (NTAL), District Education Officers (DEO), local markets, and several other community organizations.
In his speech, Hon. Williams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve the people of Pleebo Sodoken District, emphasizing that his position was not a right but a cherished privilege. “This is not a right, but a privilege which I cherish so much,” he said. He acknowledged the challenges faced by the district and emphasized that these issues can only be solved through unity and collaboration among all stakeholders.
Among the challenges highlighted by Hon. Williams were the deplorable conditions of the southeastern corridor, which the government plans to address through asphalt pavement and reconditioning. He also mentioned ongoing efforts to rehabilitate farm-to-market roads, improve access to safe drinking water, construct public latrines, create recreational centers, and enhance health delivery systems. The representative also spoke about the need for a better academic system and increased security for the district.
Williams provided a detailed overview of the legislative work he has been involved in, mentioning several significant communications he had written to the Liberian Legislature. These included calls for the review of concession agreements, increased salaries and benefits for legislative staffers, and advocacy for better management of the country’s water and sewer systems. Additionally, he highlighted efforts to improve road infrastructure, such as the maintenance of key corridors like Saclepea to Zwedru and Zwedru to Kanweaken.
He also mentioned several successful initiatives, including the establishment of a District Development Council, which is responsible for identifying and addressing the district’s developmental needs. Some of the projects supported by the council include the donation of an ambulance and medical supplies to the Pleebo Health Center, a new utility pickup for the district, the renovation of the Gedetarbo Court, and the construction of a market annex at the Pleebo General Market.
In a nod to the importance of education, Rep. Williams also highlighted the donation of a 32 seated bus to Tubman University, which will be used to transport students from Pleebo District, as well as a 32 seated bus for the religious community. The ongoing construction and rehabilitation of over 34 kilometers of alley roads in the district is another major project that is set to benefit the people of Pleebo Sodoken District.
Hon. Williams concluded his speech by stressing the importance of peace and reconciliation in the district. Acknowledging the political tensions that arose after the 2023 elections, he expressed his commitment to fostering unity and bridging divides within the community. “We have fought and still fighting to reconcile the district after the huge political clash of 2023 elections. We have achieved a little in this endeavor, and still fighting for more,” he said.
He also sought to dispel the notion that the position of representative belonged to any one individual or group. “We have denounced this perception,” he said, stressing that the position belongs to any eligible, qualified, and competent citizen of the district.
As the program concluded, Hon. Williams was presented with certificates and gowns by various groups in recognition of his efforts and leadership. Many residents praised him for the significant strides in development within the district and for keeping the lines of communication open with the people.
In his final remarks, Representative Williams reassured the people of Pleebo Sodoken District that he would continue to work tirelessly to fulfill the promises made during his election campaign. “We can rest assured you that WE WILL NOT LET YOU DOWN,” he stated, leaving the community with a renewed sense of hope for a brighter future.
The day’s events marked a significant milestone in the district’s journey toward progress and unity, with residents expressing their continued support for their representative’s leadership.
