Former Ganta City Mayor Amos N. G. Suah is calling for the impeachment of Chief Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay amid a dispute over the demolition of properties in Ganta. Suah’s call follows comments by Chief Justice Gbeisay explaining the court process behind the recent demolition. During a radio appearance, Gbeisay said the action was based on an order from the Ganta Magisterial Court and enforced through the Supreme Court of Liberia.
Gbeisay said the disputed property belongs to the Turay family and alleged that some of the people occupying the land later acquired it after being displaced during Liberia’s civil war. He identified Suah as one of those who occupied the property and alleged that the former mayor later sold portions of it to other occupants whose structures were affected by the demolition.
The Chief Justice also accused Suah of selling several government-owned properties during his tenure as Ganta City Mayor under former President George Weah. He said properties identified as government land would be reclaimed and urged occupants to prepare to leave.
Responding to Gbeisay, Suah questioned the Chief Justice’s knowledge of land matters in Nimba County and described him as a Lofa County native. “QuiQui from Lofa County, what does he know about Nimba properties?” Suah asked. Suah also described Gbeisay as his “secret enemy,” saying their relationship changed after Gbeisay became Chief Justice. He is now calling for the Chief Justice’s impeachment over the matter.
