Int’l Community Applauds Nec And Lnp Ahead Of Nimba By-election, Urges Transparency

MONROVIA – The International Community has issued a joint statement commending the National Elections Commission (NEC) and the Liberia National Police (LNP) for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful process ahead of the Nimba County by-election scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

The by-election comes as citizens of Nimba County prepare to elect a new senator to replace their long-serving Senator, Prince Yormie Johnson, who passed away on Thursday, November 28, 2024, at the age of 72. Johnson, a dominant political figure in the county for decades, leaves behind a legacy that continues to shape the region’s political landscape.

In the statement released Monday, April 21, 2025, the International Community reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Liberia’s democratic journey and called for a free, fair, and transparent electoral process.

“As Nimba heads to the by-election on April 22, 2025, we encourage all stakeholders to abide by the terms of the Farmington River Declaration and all relevant laws to foster a credible, free, fair, inclusive and peaceful electoral process,” the statement said.

The International Community praised the work done thus far by the NEC, the LNP, and all security agencies, describing their roles as instrumental in maintaining order and public trust in the electoral process. It also emphasized the importance of impartiality from all institutions involved in the by-election.

“We commend the National Elections Commission, the Liberia National Police and all security agencies for the work done so far and urge all institutions to remain impartial to build confidence in a credible and successful electoral process,” the joint statement added.

As the people of Nimba prepare to go to the polls, the International Community urged citizens to remain peaceful and engaged in the democratic process, highlighting the role of every Liberian in strengthening democratic governance.

“Finally, the International Community urges all citizens to play their role in forging further democratic gains in Liberia,” the statement concluded.
