MONROVIA – Former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Liberia, Cllr. Kabineh M. Ja’neh, has delivered a stinging rebuke of the ruling Unity Party, expressing deep regret over his past support for President Joseph Boakai’s administration. In a strongly worded statement on Friday, June 2025, Ja’neh declared, “I regret ever supporting the Unity Party, and I’m sorry to the Liberian people. I was equally lied to.”
Cllr. Ja’neh, who played a key role in endorsing Boakai during the 2023 presidential election, did not mince words in criticizing the direction of the government. He accused the administration of becoming “lawless” and of undermining the rule of law, specifically pointing to what he called a blatant disregard for the authority of the Supreme Court and other constitutionally protected institutions.
“This is not the party I supported,” Ja’neh stated. “The leadership has no respect for tenure positions, no regard for the Supreme Court, and certainly no commitment to good governance.”
The former Justice warned of a growing culture of political interference in governance and described the Unity Party’s actions as a betrayal of the principles it once championed. His remarks add to a chorus of voices raising concern over the Boakai administration’s alleged mismanagement, marginalization of institutions, and weakening of democratic checks and balances.
Ja’neh’s denunciation of the Unity Party comes just over a year into Boakai’s presidency and is expected to resonate both within political circles and among civil society actors who supported the administration’s rise to power.
Despite outreach efforts, the Unity Party has yet to issue an official response to Ja’neh’s criticism.
