Ldea Conducts Employee Drug Tests, All Initial Results Negative

MONROVIA – The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), in collaboration with the Africa Union Trading Company, Inc., has begun a sweeping drug testing exercise for its employees, marking what officials describe as a new era of accountability and discipline within the agency.

According to a press release issued Wednesday, September 3, 2025, and signed by G. Olando Demey, Chief of the Public Relations Department, the testing started at the LDEA headquarters in Monrovia with more than 70 staff members undergoing screening. The process included the three interim directors, sectional heads, and both senior and junior staff.

The agency confirmed that all employees tested during the first round were cleared of any illegal substances, a result it hailed as a promising start to the campaign. “This exercise represents a critical step in strengthening accountability, transparency, and discipline within the LDEA,” the interim leadership emphasized in the statement.

Officials said the initiative is part of a broader strategy to ensure the agency maintains the highest standards of integrity as it carries out its mandate to fight drug-related crimes. The statement further explained that random drug testing will continue on a periodic basis to reinforce discipline and maintain public trust.

“This is not a one-time measure but part of a long-term commitment to ensure every officer of the LDEA upholds professionalism,” the release noted.

The leadership also announced that the program will gradually extend beyond Monrovia. In the coming days, employees in other parts of Montserrado County will be screened, followed by testing in the remaining 14 counties.

The Africa Union Trading Company, Inc. and the LDEA reaffirmed their shared commitment to creating a drug-free workforce, stressing that the success of the agency’s operations depends on credibility and public confidence.

“The fight against drugs requires not only enforcement against offenders but also integrity within our own ranks,” the statement declared.

With this initiative underway, authorities say they hope to send a strong signal to the public that the agency is determined to lead by example in the fight against drug abuse and trafficking across Liberia.
