The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Bong County Detachment has destroyed over L$10.5 million worth of illegal drugs, marking a significant step in the county’s battle against drug trafficking and abuse.
According to Deputy Commander Lewis N. Geelar, the destroyed substances were confiscated between June 4, 2024, and June 26, 2025, following a year-long operation targeting high-risk drug zones in the region.
“The total street value of the drugs we destroyed is US$55,292.39, which is equivalent to over L$10, 505, 555,” Geelar revealed during a public burning exercise in Gbarnga as part of this year’s World Drug Day observance.
Providing a breakdown of the substances seized over the past year, Deputy Commander Geelar disclosed that the LDEA Bong Detachment confiscated 1,145.2 grams of Kush, valued at US$22,904 or L$4,351,760; 130.3 grams of Cocaine, valued at US$7,020 or L$1,333,800; and 260.4 grams of Heroin, valued at US$11,830.50 or L$2,247,795.
He further noted that 103.8 kilograms of Marijuana were seized, with a street value of US$10,380 or L$1,972,200. Additionally, 30 packs of Tramadol were confiscated, valued at US$3,157.89 or L$600,000.
“These drugs were removed from our communities before they could harm our citizens, especially the youth,” Geelar stated.
As part of their ongoing operations, the Bong County LDEA Detachment recently arrested and charged two suspects in connection with the unlawful possession of narcotics. The individuals, Zarwu Kennedy (32) and Princess Varnah (30), were apprehended near the St. John River in Kokoyah Statutory District #1.
The suspects were found in possession of Kush and Marijuana and have since admitted to the crime. They have been charged and forwarded to the 9th Judicial Circuit Court for prosecution.
As Liberia joins the global community in observing the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, Deputy Commander Geelar used the occasion to caution young people against substance abuse.
“To the youth of Bong County and Liberia at large: steer clear of drugs,” he warned. “These substances only lead to pain, crime, and lost futures. Don’t become a victim.”
He reiterated the LDEA’s unwavering commitment to reducing drug abuse and trafficking in the county. “We will not relent in this fight,” he declared. “The safety of our communities and the future of our children depend on it.”
June 26, observed annually as World Drug Day, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987. The day aims to promote international cooperation in addressing the global drug problem through health-centered and preventative approaches, rather than punitive-only responses.
As Liberia grapples with rising substance use, the Bong County detachment’s actions stand as a bold example of local enforcement aligned with global drug prevention goals.
“Destroying these drugs is more than a symbolic act,” said Geelar. “It’s a statement of our determination to protect lives and restore hope in our communities.”
