Ahead of the World Drug Day celebration, the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency Bong County Detachment has launched a massive cleanup exercise in Gbarnga, Bong County.
Lewis N. Geelar, the Deputy Commander, stated that the exercise is meant to give Gbarnga City a facelift and promote good hygiene practices.
He stressed that the cleanup exercise will help reinforce the efforts of the Gbarnga City Corporation in cleaning up the city.
The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) Deputy Commander for the Bong County Detachment revealed that the LDEA will on June 25, 2025, begin an awareness program in the County.
The awareness comes as LDEA observes the World International Drug Day celebration on June 26, 2025.
Commander Geelar said the awareness campaign will target students, men, women, youth, and disadvantaged youths (Zogoes) regarding the dangers of drugs.
According to him, it is aimed at educating citizens about the upcoming celebration.
Geelar stressed the importance of involving citizens in the process because they have always accused the LDEA of doing nothing regarding the fight against illicit drugs in Liberia.
“But we want to provide more education and awareness regarding the operations of the agency,” Deputy Commander Lewis N. Geelar said.
He further cautioned the young people to distance themselves from drugs, warning them of the sad effects.
Through more education, he thinks locals will help to reduce the spread of illicit drugs in the county.
According to Mr. Geelar, the LDEA Bong County Chapter has charged and sent 47 drug suspects to court in the County since they assumed their leadership roles.
As they observe the World International Drugs Day celebration on June 26, 2025, Deputy Commander Geelar disclosed that the LDEA is expected to burn more than LR$7 m worth of illicit drugs in Melekie, Gbarnga, Bong County.
