Bo Waterside, Grand Cape Mount County, Liberia – February 17, 2025 – The Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) achieved a significant victory in its ongoing battle against drug trafficking, seizing 234 kilograms of cocaine with an estimated street value of USD 126,846 at Bo Waterside on February 8, 2025. The operation, which occurred at approximately 10:00 am, resulted in the arrest of David Dioumessy, a 44-year-old Nigerian national residing in Conakry, Guinea.
LDEA Director General Anthony Souh announced the successful operation at a press conference held at the LDEA headquarters in Monrovia on Friday, February 14, 2025. He explained that Dioumessy, traveling on a Guinean ECOWAS passport (No. 001070389), was apprehended while attempting to avoid a security search at a warehouse. A subsequent search of his suitcase revealed the concealed cocaine. The street value of the seized drugs is equivalent to 24,734,970 Liberian Dollars (LRD). Dioumessy is currently in LDEA custody and is pending further investigation.
Director General Souh emphasized the critical need for collaborative efforts in combating drug abuse and trafficking in Liberia. “Fighting drug trafficking should not only be the responsibility of law enforcement; it requires the involvement of community leaders, youth groups, women’s organizations, landlords, and the media,” Souh stated. He specifically called on landlords to thoroughly screen their tenants to prevent drug dealers from operating from their properties. “This is a national concern that requires every Liberian’s involvement,” he stressed. “If we can control drug distribution, we can significantly reduce drug use in Liberia.”
Souh reassured the public of the LDEA’s unwavering commitment to eradicating drug-related crimes. He affirmed the agency’s experience and determination to intensify operations and dismantle drug networks across the country. He issued a strong warning to young people to avoid drugs, reminding them that they are the future leaders of Liberia. “The government, under the leadership of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, is taking the fight against drug abuse seriously,” he declared. “This is not a joke. The President has declared drugs an enemy of the state, and we are committed to protecting our children.”
Director Souh urged all Liberians to join the LDEA’s efforts to create a drug-free nation. He encouraged the public to report any suspicious drug activities, guaranteeing that all information would be treated with the utmost confidentiality. “We cannot win this fight alone,” he stated. “A drug-free Liberia is possible, but it requires collective action from every citizen.”
