MONROVIA, September 18, 2026: The Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) is preparing to deploy 74,500 smart meters across parts of the country in a major push to curb illegal electricity consumption, reduce commercial losses and strengthen monitoring of power usage.
Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel Sanoe disclosed the plan Thursday, September 17, during the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing in Monrovia, where he read a statement on behalf of LEC.
According to the statement, 14,500 smart meters have already arrived in Liberia, while an additional 60,000 are expected within the next month.
Deployment of the newly arrived meters is expected to begin during the first week of October 2026, initially targeting communities covered under LEC’s smart-metering pilot program.
“The program is being implemented in partnership with Synapse and forms part of LEC’s broader effort to modernize electricity management and strengthen revenue protection,” the statement said.
LEC expects the technology to improve its ability to monitor electricity consumption, detect irregularities and meter tampering, and strengthen accountability in electricity usage and billing.
The initiative comes as the state-owned electricity provider continues efforts to address illegal connections and other commercial losses that affect revenue collection and the reliability of electricity services.
Smart meters allow utilities to obtain more detailed information on electricity consumption and can help identify unusual usage patterns that may indicate unauthorized connections or meter interference.
LEC says the deployment is part of its broader effort to modernize Liberia’s electricity distribution system while improving revenue protection and customer accountability.
