In a strategic move to strengthen the nation’s electricity sector, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has appointed new acting leadership at the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC), signaling a new chapter for the institution.

The appointments, which take immediate effect, see Mohammed M. Sherif stepping in as Acting Managing Director, while Eric Augustine B. Frederick assumes the role of Acting Deputy Managing Director for Administration. Thomas Z. Gonkerwon will take over as Acting Deputy Managing Director for Operations.

These leadership changes are part of an ongoing effort by President Boakai’s administration to address the power sector’s pressing challenges. The newly appointed officials will serve until they are formally confirmed by the Liberian Senate, pending their return and the Senate’s approval.

In announcing the appointments, President Boakai urged the new leadership to approach their responsibilities with a strong sense of duty, emphasizing the importance of professionalism, integrity, and a commitment to improving the services of LEC.

He also called for continued diligence in resolving the energy sector’s challenges, noting that the future of reliable electricity for Liberia depends on effective governance and leadership at LEC.

The appointments come at a critical time when the government is intensifying efforts to stabilize and reform the electricity sector. With new leadership in place, there are hopes for a renewed focus on improving the efficiency and reach of Liberia’s electricity distribution.

As the country looks toward progress in the energy sector, the acting management at LEC faces the significant task of overcoming longstanding challenges to deliver reliable and affordable power to the people of Liberia.
