Liberia: $5M Libel Lawsuit Filed Against Former LDEA Deputy Director

MONROVIA – The Sixth Judicial Circuit Civil Law Court at the Temple of Justice has summoned former Deputy Director for Operations of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Hassan Fadiga, and his brother, Hassein Fadiga, in a $5 million libel lawsuit filed by former LDEA Director General Abraham Kromah. The lawsuit stems from allegations made by Hassan Fadiga during a recent appearance on the Spoon Radio Talk Show.

Kromah is seeking $2 million in special damages and $3 million in general damages, citing contract losses and reputational harm caused by the defendants’ statements. He argues that the false and malicious claims have led to psychological distress, social rejection, and damage to his professional standing.

According to the complaint, Hassan Fadiga admitted on the Spoon Talk Show that he was awaiting his confirmation hearing at the Capitol Building and was not an official of the LDEA at the time of the arrest of an alleged drug kingpin known as “Japan.” Despite this, he allegedly misrepresented the facts by asserting that he was consulted by Kromah during the investigation and played a crucial role in preventing Kromah from compromising the case.

Kromah contends that these statements were defamatory, designed to tarnish his reputation. He refutes Fadiga’s claims that he secretly visited “Japan” while he was incarcerated to interfere with the investigation. Kromah insists that these allegations are baseless and aimed at damaging his character.

Additionally, the complaint alleges that Hassan Fadiga accused Kromah of removing a CCTV hard drive from “Japan’s” residence to conceal evidence of drug transactions, as well as confiscating other items, including six blank passports, without reporting them to the LDEA.

As part of the lawsuit, Kromah has requested the court to obtain and review recordings of the Spoon Talk Show to substantiate his claims. He argues that Hassan Fadiga’s statements were deliberate attempts to blackmail him using fabricated intelligence.

Hassein Fadiga, identified as the second defendant, is Hassan’s twin brother and a self-proclaimed social commentator. According to the complaint, he has participated in spreading misinformation against Kromah on multiple radio platforms, including Spoon Talk Show.

Kromah further asserts that he will provide evidence demonstrating that Hassan Fadiga was not affiliated with the LDEA at the time of “Japan’s” arrest. He maintains that the lawsuit seeks to hold both defendants accountable for their defamatory remarks.

Hassan Fadiga, the first defendant, is a Liberian citizen appointed by the President of Liberia as the Deputy Director-General for Operations of the LDEA. Kromah, who previously led the agency, appointed Fadiga to manage its operations and oversee field agents in the fight against drug-related crimes.
