Liberia: Birds Feeding from Nearby Dumpsites Disrupt Power Supply at Roberts International Airport, LAA Informs Senate Committee

Monrovia – The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA) has informed the Senate Transport Committee that a group of birds, feeding from nearby dumpsites, has been causing significant disruptions to the airport’s power supply.

This issue became evident on Sunday evening when a temporary power outage affected operations at Roberts International Airport (RIA).

Initially, the LAA had attributed the disruption to an electrical issue stemming from the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) power grid.

However, in a subsequent update, LAA officials revealed that the birds have been perching on the airport’s transformers, leading to frequent electricity problems. This unusual interference has resulted in intermittent power outages, significantly impacting operations at the airport.

The disruption led to operational challenges at the airport’s terminal, affecting both passengers and staff. LAA officials apologized for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that efforts to restore full power are underway, with LAA working closely with LEC technicians to resolve the issue.

“The Liberia Airport Authority deeply regrets any inconvenience caused by this disruption and is fully committed to resolving the situation as swiftly and safely as possible,” the LAA said in a statement.

Despite the challenges, the LAA reassured passengers and visitors that all necessary measures were being taken to restore normal operations quickly and minimize delays.

The LAA has yet to outline specific measures to address the bird-related issue, but the situation remains a growing concern for both airport management and passengers.
