Liberia: Bishop Kortu Brown Urges President Boakai to Halt Dismissal of 300 Transport Ministry Workers

Brewerville, Montserrado County – Bishop Kortu Brown is calling on President Joseph Boakai to urgently intervene in the ongoing standoff at the Ministry of Transport, where nearly 300 employees face dismissal amid efforts to outsource key departmental functions to a non-Liberian company.

“We have observed over the past several days how the workers have consistently protested and pleaded with the Government to reconsider this decision—but to no avail,” Bishop Brown said. “We commend the Liberian Senate for siding with the workers and calling for a suspension and review of the contract.”

The Bishop, a prominent religious leader and advocate for social justice, linked his appeal to the upcoming National Fast and Prayer Day, stressing that true fasting must go beyond religious rituals and address the suffering of ordinary citizens.

“As we go into fasting and prayer for the nation, it’s important to consider the kind of fast God requires,” Bishop Brown stated, referencing Isaiah 58:6–7, which speaks to freeing the oppressed, feeding the hungry, and clothing the poor.

“That’s the kind of fast that attracts God’s attention—not just abstaining from food or staying in church all day,” he emphasized. “Let us show mercy, remove the chains of injustice and oppression, and let the oppressed go free.”

He warned that prioritizing foreign companies—whether Liberia Transport Management or others—over Liberian workers sets a troubling precedent.

“The people contending for their jobs are also God’s children. No foreign company should be preferred over Liberians or Liberian interests,” Bishop Brown said.

He concluded with a direct plea to the President:

“President Boakai, I call on you to kindly and speedily address the plight of these workers, even as we fast and pray on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. We can only lift Liberia if we lift Liberians.”
