Liberia: Businessman Killed by Former Nimba Inspector’s Vehicle in Ganta, Police Launch Investigation

The victim, Edwin P. Gonleyen, 61, was reportedly purchasing gasoline for his motorcycle near the Ganta Cemetery when he was fatally hit by an SUV registered to Gbliwon.

The vehicle, bearing plate number A-615978, was being operated by a family member, Morris Junior, 37, at the time of the incident.

Eyewitnesses said the SUV was traveling at high speed when it veered and collided with Gonleyen, who had pulled over at the roadside with a gallon of gasoline. The impact caused severe injuries, and Gonleyen was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The vehicle came too fast and just struck him without warning,” one witness said. “There was no time for anyone to react.”

The Liberia National Police Traffic Division in Ganta has launched an investigation and is currently seeking additional information from witnesses. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the driver, Morris Junior, is in custody. His current whereabouts remain unknown.

Police confirmed that the incident adds to a troubling pattern of fatal road accidents in the county. According to FrontPageAfrica sources, Nimba County has recorded at least ten motorcycle-related fatalities in less than a month, sparking public concern over increasing road safety risks.

Local residents and community leaders have expressed sorrow and frustration over the incident, describing Gonleyen as a well-known and respected businessman. Friends and family mourned his death, calling it a tragic and preventable loss.

“This is heartbreaking,” said a community member. “He was a kind man, always helping others. Now he’s gone just like that.”

Police are urging motorists to exercise greater caution, particularly in congested areas and near roadside fuel stops. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have pledged to provide updates and ensure accountability.
