Liberia: CDC Chairman Jangar Kowo Released Following Arrest for ‘Obstructing Police Functions’

Monrovia – The Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Cllr. Jangar Kowo, along with an unidentified party supporter, was arrested on Saturday by officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) on allegations of obstructing justice.

The arrests occurred during a protest staged by CDC partisans demanding the release of former House Speaker Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa and several other lawmakers currently in detention at the Monrovia Central Prison.

Kowo and the unnamed male supporter were seen handcuffed and escorted into a police vehicle by LNP officers. The police have yet to disclose the location to which the two were taken following their arrest.

The protest followed a ruling by the Monrovia City Court ordering the incarceration of Cllr. Koffa and three sitting lawmakers in connection with the December 2024 fire at the Capitol Building. While the full details of the charges remain unclear, the case has sparked significant political tension. Many CDC supporters have denounced the arrests as politically motivated.

As of press time, neither the Liberia National Police nor the Ministry of Justice had released an official statement clarifying the legal basis for Kowo’s arrest or the continued detention of the lawmakers.

The arrest of the CDC Chairman has intensified political unrest and prompted growing concerns from civil society organizations over the potential erosion of due process and the rule of law in handling high-profile political cases.

While CDC officials have not yet issued a formal statement, party insiders say an emergency meeting is being convened to respond to the unfolding crisis.
