Methodist Bishop Warns

By Stephanie M. Duncan
The Bishop of the United Methodist Church in Liberia, Rev. Dr. Samuel J. Quire Jr., has cautioned that Liberia could face a serious national security threat if the growing crisis of disadvantaged youth is not urgently addressed.
Bishop Quire, speaking Wednesday at the 19th graduation ceremony of the New Life Recovery Program in Monrovia, warned that the continued neglect of young people struggling with substance abuse could eventually push them toward staging a coup in the country.
“If nothing is done to rescue these young people from the grip of drugs, we may one day face a situation where they will rise up against the state,” Bishop Quire said.
He urged parents, communities, and the government not to relent in their efforts to rehabilitate disadvantaged youths. The Methodist Bishop said drugs crisis is alarming across the nation and urgent attention is needed.
“Government and parents must continue the fight for the future of these children. Abandoning them is not an option because they remain an integral part of the country’s future,” the bishop emphasized.
The New Life Recovery Program which has been working to reform drug-affected youths through rehabilitation and reintegration, graduated its 19th batch of participants during Wednesday’s ceremony.
