The match, held at the Samuel Kanyon Sports Complex, marked Weah’s first attendance at a local game in years.
The game, a top-of-the-table clash in the Liberia Football Association’s 1st Division, ended in a 1-1 draw. Samuel Leo’s powerful strike in the 20th minute gave FC Fassell the lead, but Lawrence Kumeh’s stunning equalizer ensured the points were shared.
Weah’s presence at the match was met with cheers from the crowd, a reflection of his lasting legacy in Liberian football. After the match, he revealed that he was invited by FC Fassell’s president, Cassell Kuoh. “My friend Cassell Kuoh asked me to come and watch this game,” Weah said with a smile.
Despite his long absence from local games, Weah took note of the talent on display. “For this level, it’s okay,” he remarked, reflecting on the players’ performances. “During my time, it was a different era. We can’t compare our time— we had strong, fast players. But today, we see a lot of young children. What we watched today shows that Liberia has talent,” he added.
Weah’s words echoed a message of encouragement to the next generation of footballers. “You have to be inspired, work hard, and if you get the opportunity, make the most of it,” he said, urging aspiring players to seize every chance that comes their way.
The former Invincible Eleven forward’s visit to the match brought a nostalgic sense of pride to fans, reminding them of his immense contribution to both Liberian and global football.
