Monrovia, July 16, 2026, Liberia – The Government of Germany, through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and Welthungerhilfe (WHH), has donated one vehicle and four motorcycles to the Community of Hope Agriculture Project (CHAP) to strengthen the implementation of its Climate-Resilient Rice Production Project in Liberia.
The donation, presented during a ceremony at CHAP’s headquarters in Zubah Town Community, Du Port Road, Paynesville, is expected to enhance field operations and improve the delivery of agricultural services to farming communities participating in the project.
The vehicle and motorcycles will increase staff mobility, strengthen project monitoring and supervision, and enable technical teams to provide timely extension services and technical support to farmers in remote communities.
The logistical support is also expected to accelerate the expansion of the System of Rice Intensification (SRI), a climate-smart rice production approach that increases productivity while reducing water consumption and improving resilience to climate change.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Welthungerhilfe Country Director Hubert D. Charles said the donation reflects the Government of Germany’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable agriculture and strengthening the resilience of Liberia’s smallholder farmers.
Charles noted that the transportation assets will enable CHAP to broaden its outreach, improve technical assistance to farmers, and ensure the effective implementation of climate-resilient rice production activities across project communities.
Receiving the donation, CHAP Executive Director Bishop Robert S.M. Bimba expressed appreciation to the Government of Germany, BMZ, and Welthungerhilfe for what he described as a timely investment in the organization’s operational capacity.
He reaffirmed CHAP’s commitment to working alongside farming communities to expand climate-smart agricultural practices, increase rice production, improve household livelihoods, and contribute to Liberia’s food security and agricultural self-sufficiency.
Bimba explained that the Climate-Resilient Rice Production Project originated from a BMZ call for proposals in March 2022. CHAP submitted a proposal that successfully passed a rigorous evaluation process before receiving approval in August 2024 for implementation in partnership with Welthungerhilfe.
The project seeks to increase rice production through climate-smart agricultural technologies while improving the livelihoods and resilience of smallholder farming households.
Project Background
The BMZ-funded Climate-Resilient Rice Production Project is currently working with 1,200 smallholder farmers across Grand Gedeh and Montserrado counties to cultivate 500 hectares of lowland farmland using integrated climate-smart farming systems.
The initiative promotes the combined production of rice, fish, and vegetables, enabling farming families to diversify income sources, improve household nutrition, and strengthen resilience against climate change.
The project supports farmers with technical training, extension services, improved farming practices, and climate-resilient technologies designed to increase productivity while protecting natural resources.
