Liberia: Government Begins Demolition at CDC Headquarters Amid Court-Ordered Eviction

Monrovia – The Government of Liberia, acting on the orders of the Sixth Judicial Circuit Court, has begun demolishing structures at the national headquarters of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) in Congo Town.

True to his Friday announcement, Police Inspector General Gregory Coleman deployed officers to aid the court in enforcing its eviction order. On Saturday morning, heavy equipment moved onto the premises, tearing down the perimeter fence, the decorated entrance, and parts of the Muna E. Pelham Vocational School located on the property.

The CDC, however, has described the exercise as an “invasion.” Party Chairman Janga Kowo said the CDC had perfected appeals to the Supreme Court and secured approval of appeal bonds from Civil Law Court Judge George Smith. He argued that the ongoing eviction undermines the judicial process.

Kowo also noted that the demolition coincides with the party’s planned mass meeting scheduled for Saturday and called on partisans to turn out in defiance of what he termed government intimidation.

With significant damage already done to key facilities, it remains unclear whether the CDC will proceed with its planned meeting at the headquarters.
