Liberia: Gov’t, Partners Commission PSA Oxygen Plants to Strengthen Healthcare System

The event featured a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony at JFD Hospital in Tappita, attended by key health sector partners and stakeholders, including the Global Fund Liberia Country Team, the Liberia Coordinating Mechanism (LCM), LFA, Plan International Liberia, CRS, and the Nimba County Health Team (CHT).

Tappita, Nimba County – In a demonstration of its strong commitment to strengthening Liberia’s health sector infrastructure and addressing critical gaps in health emergencies, the Government of Liberia, alongside its health sector development partners including the Global Fund (GF) officially commissioned and handed over Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) Oxygen Plants, recently constructed in Lofa, Nimba, Grand Gedeh, and Grand Kru counties, on Wednesday, 27 February 2025.

According to a release, these facilities, now supplying medical-grade oxygen to hospitals in the regions and across the nation, were built through a collaborative initiative involving key stakeholders such as the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Government of Liberia, the Global Fund Emergency Response, Plan International Liberia (as Principal Recipient), and county administrators.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s health sector and underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing resilience against crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and other respiratory diseases.

The commissioning and handover ceremony took place at the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Referral Hospital in Tappita City, Nimba County. The event featured a symbolic ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by key health sector partners and stakeholders, including the Global Fund Liberia Country Team, the Liberia Coordinating Mechanism (LCM), LFA, Plan International Liberia, CRS, and the Nimba County Health Team (CHT).

Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Catherine T. Cooper, who represented Minister Dr. Louis Kpoto, officially cut the ribbon in the presence of Mr. Mannase Kassi, Fund Portfolio Manager, GFATM and Ms. Joyce L. Kilikpo, LCM Chair  to mark the opening of the facilities.

This initiative marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s health sector and underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing resilience against crises such as the COVID-19 pandemic and other respiratory diseases.

Following the ceremony, Dr. Cooper was given a tour of the plants and other infrastructure at the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Referral Hospital. She commended the support of the Global Fund, which has played a crucial role in addressing significant gaps in Liberia’s healthcare delivery system and ensuring the increased production and supply of life-saving oxygen to hospitals across the nation.

The Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Health, acknowledges the substantial contributions of the Global Fund and other health partners in achieving critical health outcomes and working towards sustainable healthcare solutions for Liberia.

As Liberia continues to strengthen its healthcare capacity, the PSA Oxygen plants stand as symbols of hope and progress.
