Liberia Internet Governance Forum Opens in Paynesville | News

Wednesday, September 3, marks the commencement of the 6th annual Liberia Internet Governance Forum (LIGF) at the Liberia Learning Centre in Paynesville City.

Themed “Building Digital Trust and Inclusion in Liberia’s Internet Ecosystem,” this flagship digital and internet policy forum is Liberia’s national counterpart to the United Nations’ global Internet Governance Forum.

The multi-stakeholder event is scheduled from Wednesday, September 3, 2025, to Thursday, September 4, 2025.

This significant gathering arrives at a crucial moment, especially for Liberian students and the youthful populace, highlighting the importance of digital literacy and the impact of Artificial Intelligence. Celebrating six years of advancements in global digital governance, the opening ceremony underscores a renewed commitment to fostering an Internet environment that is open, secure, inclusive, and rooted in human dignity and rights.

During brief opening remarks, Peterking Quaye, Chair and Head of the National Secretariat of the Liberia IGF, stated, “As we explore the team of digital inclusion, cybersecurity, and innovation, let us recognize the importance of collaboration and knowledge sharing. The presence here today attests to collective action in shaping Liberia’s digital future.

He added, “Together, let the highest potential of good technology drive economic growth, improve education, and enhance governance.

Centered around the main theme “Building Digital Trust and Inclusion in Liberia’s Internet Ecosystem,” Liberia IGF 2025 convenes over 100 attendees from high schools, youth organizations, and essential stakeholders in the digital sector, all gathering face-to-face. The Forum is acknowledged as Liberia’s most comprehensive platform for discussions on digital policy.

Emphasizing the significance of this key moment as well as the continued progress of the Forum, Ellen Attoh-Wreh, representative for Margibi County District #3, remarks, May the Liberia IGF 2025 held in Paynesville City mark a new chapter as we advance toward a digital future founded on trust, fairness, and respect for human dignity.”

Over the course of two days, attendees will explore methods for creating digital environments that are secure, transparent, and respectful of individual rights—focusing on fact-checking, responsible AI applications, and highlighting the necessity of ethical guidelines, proactive regulation, and sustainable growth in the digital realm.

The discussions will revolve around four key themes: digital trust and resilience; innovation that is sustainable and accountable; universal access alongside digital rights; and cooperation in the digital sphere. These conversations aim to rebuild confidence in digital infrastructures and address adaptation challenges brought on by artificial intelligence, changing social media landscapes, and the pervasive issues of misinformation and disinformation.

The Forum will also deliberate on strategies to bridge the digital gap and safeguard online human rights—such as privacy, free expression, and information accessibility—to foster inclusive participation in digital spaces. It serves as a platform for collaborative digital governance, involving diverse stakeholders worldwide, including voices from the Global South, young people, and marginalized groups.
