Liberia: Janga Kowo Denies Obstructing Police, Promises Official CDC Response After Release

The Chairman of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), Janga Kowo, said he sees no reason for being forcefully detained by police, insisting that their assembly was peaceful.

Kowo had led a group of CDC partisans to the Monrovia Central Prison, where former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and three other CDC lawmakers were jailed by the Monrovia City Court following accusations of masterminding the December 2024 “arson attack” on the Capitol Building.

Footage showed Kowo being handcuffed and bundled into a Liberian National Police pickup before being taken to the Monrovia Central Prison. He was accused of obstructing police functions—an allegation he firmly denied.

Speaking to reporters after his release, Kowo condemned the police action and reaffirmed his party’s commitment to abide by the law.

He also announced that the CDC would issue an official response from its headquarters later today.
