Liberia: Kogar Poised for Victory in Nimba Senate Race as NEC Tallies Over 92% of Votes

Monrovia – Samuel Kogar of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) is set to win the Nimba County Senatorial by-election, based on provisional results released by the National Elections Commission (NEC).

With votes counted from 682 out of 736 polling places — representing 92.66% of the total —

Kogar leads with 56,706 votes, translating to 51.43%. His closest rival, Independent candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh, trails significantly with 38,454 votes or 34.87%.

Kogar, who represents the MDR—the political party founded by the late Senator Prince Johnson—is on course to secure a decisive victory in one of Liberia’s most politically significant counties.

The by-election was necessitated by the passing of Senator Johnson in November 2024. The contest to fill the vacant Senate seat has been closely followed both in Nimba and nationally, given the county’s electoral weight and the influence of the late senator.

The NEC is expected to release final results once the remaining 54 polling places are tallied. If the current trend holds, Kogar will be officially declared winner in the coming days.
