In his speech, Cllr. Varmah emphasized the critical need for impartiality within the justice system and stressed that the judiciary must remain free from external influence to fulfill its role in upholding the rule of law.
He underscored the importance of judicial independence for fostering a just and equitable society.
“The judiciary must remain impartial and free from any form of external pressure to fulfill its sacred duty to dispense justice impartially,” Cllr. Varmah declared to a gathering of legal professionals, dignitaries, and government officials.
Varmah also highlighted the challenges of financial mismanagement and corruption, which have plagued various sectors, including the judiciary.
He called for greater transparency in managing public resources, advocating for regular audits, financial oversight, and the application of best practices to prevent corruption.
“The necessity for transparency and accountability in the management of public resources cannot be overstated, especially within our judiciary and government systems,” he stated.
In his address, Cllr. Varmah commended the government for its adherence to the Financial Autonomy Act of 2006, a step toward ensuring the judiciary’s financial independence. However, he noted that despite progress, there remains a need for a more robust, independent judiciary to continue combating corruption, strengthening legal systems, and fostering investor confidence.
Varmah reaffirmed the LNBA’s commitment to promoting the rule of law, improving the legal profession, and strengthening the justice system.
He called for continued collaboration between the legal community, government officials, and citizens to ensure lasting progress in Liberia’s justice system.
