Monrovia – Deputy Chief of Organized Crime at the Liberia National Police (LNP), Kulee Christopher Varfley, has strongly denied allegations that he accepted a $1,600 bribe to aid the escape of a suspect in a vehicle theft case involving the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NAFAA).

The accusation was published by Golden TV Liberia and claimed Varfley facilitated the suspect’s escape to Guinea and had a record of questionable conduct allegedly protected by senior LNP officials.
Varfley has dismissed the claims as “false, malicious, and a calculated attempt to destroy his reputation.” He said he was never suspended or under investigation, contrary to what the report stated.
According to Varfley, Journalist Obed Gibah contacted him on April 14, claiming to have received information that Varfley was suspended. Varfley said he informed the journalist that the claim was untrue and that he was actively working at LNP Headquarters.
Despite this denial, the article was published without verification or reference to Varfley’s response. The report also lacked identified sources, raising concerns about its credibility.
Multiple sources within the LNP have vouched for Varfley’s professional record, stating he has served for over 15 years without facing disciplinary action. He was promoted in 2024 to Deputy Chief of Organized Crime (Code R-4) and is also a licensed attorney.
Varfley has filed a defamation lawsuit against Journalist Obed Gibah. His legal team confirmed that a writ of arrest has been issued, though Gibah has yet to appear in court. Varfley’s lawyer accused the journalist of evading the legal process.
Varfley said the media must balance accountability with responsible reporting. “I have dedicated my life to service and the law. I will continue to defend my name and uphold the trust the public has placed in me,” he said.
Golden TV Liberia has not issued a statement or responded to inquiries about the report or the legal complaint.
