MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of his Chief of Staff and Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Sylvester M. Grigsby, describing him as a confidant, loyal friend, and dedicated public servant.

“I have lost a confidant, a loyal friend, and a dedicated servant. His passing leaves a huge void in my office and in the hearts of those of us who had the privilege of working alongside him,” President Boakai wrote in a statement. He hailed Grigsby as a man of firm principles, clear vision, and unwavering commitment to public service, adding, “Today, as a nation, we honor his memory. We remember his dedication, courage, humanity, and the balance he provided in difficult times. Rest well, Grig.”

Finance Minister Augustine Ngafuan also paid tribute to Grigsby, recalling their long history as colleagues at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs where Grigsby served as Deputy Minister during Ngafuan’s tenure as Minister. He described Grigsby as a seasoned diplomat whose finesse, humility, and logical approach to problem-solving left a lasting mark on Liberia’s foreign policy. “Although you were much advanced in age, your passing came to me and many others as a shock,” Ngafuan wrote, adding that Grigsby’s counsel and cooperation were invaluable in navigating both domestic and international challenges.

The United States Embassy in Monrovia also issued a statement mourning the loss of “a crucial, longtime friend and colleague,” lauding Grigsby’s invaluable contributions to strengthening the U.S.-Liberia bilateral relationship. “Minister Grigsby was a true leader and international statesman, who made Liberia and the world a better place. He will be missed but never forgotten,” the embassy stated.

Grigsby, one of President Boakai’s most trusted officials, died on August 9, 2025, in the United States, where he had traveled about a month earlier for a scheduled medical checkup. While sources close to the government have confirmed his death, the Liberian government has yet to release an official statement, leaving many citizens in a state of confusion and concern.

Known for his pivotal role in the Boakai administration’s reform agenda, Grigsby was a key figure in efforts to strengthen governance and improve the country’s political and economic landscape. His sudden passing is expected to have significant implications for the stability and direction of the administration in the months ahead.

Funeral arrangements and official tributes are expected to be announced in the coming days.
