Monrovia-A tragic incident occurred in the Swagga Island community, resulting in the untimely deaths of two young men, Moses David, 25, and Momo Fambulleh, while cleaning a well.
The unfortunate event took place on Tuesday February 18, 2025 while they were performing a contract job for a woman identified only as Ruth.
According to eyewitnesses, the two men were deep in the well when Moses David was overwhelmed by water and began struggling. Seeing his friend in distress, Momo Fambulleh attempted a rescue but was unable to do so and tragically drowned as well.
Ruth, the woman who had contracted the men to clean her well, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. She stated that she had initially hired only Moses David to deepen her well, which had been drying up, and was devastated by the outcome of the task.
In the aftermath of the incident, community members reacted with anger, some attempting to take mob action against Ruth, believing she bore responsibility for the deaths. However, the Liberia National Police intervened, preventing any violence and restoring order.
Speaking on the matter, the chairman of the Swagga Island community, Mr. Isaac Nyehn, expressed profound regret over the tragedy. He described the deaths of the two young men as a great loss to the community, emphasizing the need for safer practices when undertaking such hazardous tasks.
As investigations continue, Ruth remains in police custody for further questioning regarding the circumstances of the incident. Authorities are urging residents to remain calm and allow the proper legal processes to take their course.
