Liberia; Pleebo Activist Arrested for Demanding Justice in Domestic Violence Case

PLEEBO, Maryland – A local activist, Fred Jaffa, has been arrested after demanding justice for Mammie Williams, a woman allegedly assaulted by her fiancé, Mechezedeck Toe, the former Mayor of Harper City.

On March 22, Williams, 30, a resident of Zone 7, reported being brutally attacked by Toe, suffering visible bruises and a bloody nose. She filed the report with the Women and Children Protection Division of the Liberia National Police in Pleebo. However, the case took an unexpected turn when Jaffa, who had posted about the assault on social media to raise awareness, was arrested.

Jaffa claims he was detained twice by Rebecca Nimely, head of the division, and had his belongings confiscated. He stated, “I never knew that she [Williams] decided to withdraw the case. My concern was to call for justice for her.”

Jaffa further alleges that after his family intervened, he was released, but his phone and money were not retained. When he returned to retrieve his belongings, he was arrested again, citing the presence of journalists at the police station.

“I’m asking, is this how people will be deprived of justice?” Jaffa questioned.

Police statements have raised suspicion. When contacted by journalists, Nimely initially confirmed that the case was under investigation. However, when asked for a follow-up on March 31, she denied any knowledge of the case, stating, “I am not aware of any case. I don’t have anyone’s phone.” The contradiction between her statements has led to concerns of potential cover-up or mishandling of the case.
