MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) on Saturday, August 23, 2025, announced the discovery of rifles and other weapons inside the national headquarters of the opposition Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) in Congo Town, Monrovia, as court sheriffs executed a long-standing eviction order.
According to the police, two rifles were found in one of the apartments of the sprawling party headquarters while demolition of the premises was underway. Authorities further disclosed that additional items allegedly uncovered during the operation included bullets, petrol bombs, narcotics, and machetes.
The discovery was made as bulldozers and excavators moved in to bring down the Munah Tech Building and the main party structures, including offices once occupied by CDC’s political leader and other senior officials. The demolition, overseen by sheriffs of the Civil Law Court, came a day after police announced plans to enforce the ruling in favor of the estate of the late Martha Stubblefield Bernard.
Despite the startling discovery, police confirmed that the eviction and demolition proceeded without resistance from party supporters. Heavy security was deployed in the area to maintain calm and prevent any potential unrest.
CDC has not issued any statement regarding the discovery of arms at its demolished headquarters. However, the party described the court order as a politically motivated attempt to destroy the party, following what it maintains was an unlawful eviction carried out despite its pending appeal before the Supreme Court.
The demolition of the CDC headquarters, which for two decades stood as the stronghold of former President George Weah’s political base, marks a historic turn in Liberia’s political landscape. But the discovery of arms and explosives on the property has added a new layer of controversy, raising questions over security, accountability, and the already tense relationship between the ruling Unity Party government and its main opposition.
