Liberia Police Suspend Multiple Officers For Misconduct And Financial Fraud In 2025

MONROVIA – The Liberia National Police (LNP) has suspended multiple officers following investigations by its Professional Standards Department, citing a wide range of misconduct, including financial fraud, abuse of authority, and administrative violations. The disciplinary actions, announced on Monday, July 14, 2025, underscore the LNP’s commitment to accountability and professional integrity across its ranks.

Among those suspended is Corporal Washington Wesseh, who was found guilty of unlawfully detaining a citizen, Mr. Dwokule Peter, and withdrawing $100 from the complainant’s mobile money account. Wesseh failed to account for $60 and was suspended for two months without salary. His reinstatement is conditional upon full restitution of the missing amount.

Superintendent Madee K. Wongbay was reassigned after being absent from duty for 117 days without approved leave, a violation of administrative procedures. Patrol Officer Albertha T. Williams was suspended indefinitely for failing to repay $675 to fellow officer Ophlia O. Lanieyo and an additional $50 to a private citizen. She will not be reinstated until she provides proof of full repayment.

Several officers were suspended without pay for failing to cooperate with internal investigations despite multiple summons. These include Patrol Officers Jack D. King, Aaron Nebo, Ephraim Bundeh, Lawrence Labrod, and Jerry Doe. Restitution amounts range from $300 to over $56,000 Liberian dollars. Reinstatement is contingent upon their cooperation and submission of validated payment receipts.

In a separate case, Patrol Officer Andrew M. Falika was suspended indefinitely for failing to repay L$8,700 to a complainant, Ms. Hawa David. He remains off duty until full compliance is achieved.

Some officers have been reinstated after meeting disciplinary requirements. Patrol Officer Esther L. Flomo reimbursed $200 to a complainant and returned to active duty. Patrol Officer Jude F. Kolongo reached a settlement with complainant Chris Yoko and confirmed payment of medical bills at the 14 Military Hospital, leading to case closure.

The LNP also cleared Superintendent Samson K. Sieh and Chief Inspector Sylvester N. Dopoh of wrongdoing in a separate case involving alleged property demolition. The investigation found insufficient evidence, and the parties were advised to seek resolution through civil legal channels.

In another matter, Corporal Doronu Togbah and Patrol Officer Ralph Gaye were suspended for one month without salary for seizing a complainant’s cellphone and allegedly misappropriating $1,500. The case has been transferred to the Crime Services Department, where both officers are now considered persons of interest in a potential criminal investigation.

The Liberia National Police emphasized that these actions are part of a broader campaign to enforce ethical conduct, restore public trust, and maintain discipline. The force reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance toward misconduct and pledged continued transparency in handling internal violations.
