Liberia Prepares to Host Major Continental Education Conference

Monrovia, May 18, 2026: The Ministry of Education (MOE) has announced that Liberia has been selected as host of the Africa Federation for Teachers’ Regulatory Authority (AFTRA) continental conference, scheduled for May 2027.

This prestigious event will bring together education ministers, teaching councils, regulatory authorities, policy makers, development partners, universities, and educational experts from across Africa.

The annual AFTRA conference serves as a platform to address issues affecting teachers, professionalism, teaching regulations, quality assurance, and the future of education on the continent.

Education Minister Dr. Maley Jarso Jallah revealed that a national organizing committee is being established to ensure the conference’s successful hosting.

The committee will include various government ministries and agencies, such as Gender and Social Protection, Information, Health, Foreign Affairs, Transport, the Liberia National Police, the Liberia Immigration Service, and the General Services Agency.

Dr. Jallah emphasized that hosting the conference is not merely an event, but an opportunity to strengthen national systems and promote collaboration for educational excellence and teachers’ professionalism.

She described the privilege as a milestone recognition of Liberia’s commitment to educational reforms, professionalism, and quality assurance.

Since becoming a full AFTRA member in 2024, Liberia has shown strong leadership in advancing teacher licensing, school accreditation, and education quality standards that align with continental and international best practices.

President Joseph N. Boakai’s office is expected to participate, underscoring the importance of education in the government’s ARREST agenda for inclusive development.

In another development, the MOE received a donation of laptops and tablets from the World Food Programme (WFP) to support the “School Connect” project. These electronic devices will assist the ministry’s IT department in capturing accurate data on the implementation of the school feeding program nationwide. The devices will help track indicators such as school enrollment, attendance, food supply, and consumption.

Despite donor support, the government of Liberia has contributed US$1.8 million to this year’s school feeding program and has committed globally to ensuring that 45% of primary school children benefit from school feeding by 2029.
