Liberia: Pres. Boakai’s Appointment of VP Koung To Review Surge In commodity Prices Welcomed

The Liberia Political Centrism Movement (LPCM) has welcomed recent decision by President Joseph Nyuma  Boakai to appoint Vice President Jeremiah Koung to chair an ad hoc committee tasked with reviewing the recent surge in commodity prices across the country.

The LPCM, in a statement issued at the weekend, pointed out that this action reflects a timely recognition of the economic pressures confronting Liberians, especially in rural and urban communities where inflation, currency depreciation, and global supply shocks have significantly weakened household purchasing power.

However, while applauding the initiative, the LPCM recommends that the committee’s mandate go beyond diagnostic review.

The LPCM stated that it should be fully empowered to consult with economic technocrats, private sector actors, and relevant institutions to devise sustainable, market-driven policy responses that mitigate recurring price shocks and enhance economic stability.

In addition, the LPCM stressed the imperative of political inclusion to foster public trust and avoid perceptions of partisan dominance and that the committee must include independent economists, business leaders, consumer rights advocates, and responsible opposition voices with a credible history of engagement.

According to LPCM, national economic resilience requires national consensus, and no single political camp can solve the problem in isolation.

“In times of economic uncertainty, national leadership must reflect both resolve and openness. The path to real reform lies in building inclusive platforms where all voices—regardless of party or position—contribute meaningfully to solutions that work for all Liberians,” said Cllr. Kanio Bai Gbala, Chairperson of the LPCM.

“The LPCM remains committed to constructive policy dialogue and urges the Boakai-led administration to make inclusive decision-making a defining hallmark of Liberia’s democratic governance and long-term development agenda,” the statement added.
