Monrovia, August 22, 2025 – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has by Proclamation declared Sunday, August 24, 2025, as “National Flag Day.” In keeping with tradition, the holiday will be observed on Monday, August 25, 2025, as a public holiday throughout the Republic.
According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Proclamation calls on all citizens and foreign residents within Liberia to observe the Day by displaying the National Flag from homes and public buildings. All government offices, as well as public and business establishments, are expected to remain closed in observance.
The observance is in line with an Act of the Legislature approved on October 25, 1915, which declared August 24 of each year as National Flag Day—a holiday set aside to honor the National Ensign as a symbol of Liberia’s sovereignty, independence, and unity.
This year’s celebration, under the theme “The Flag We Raise, The Values We Uphold,” will be organized by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with the Flag Day Planning Committee, comprising key government ministries and agencies. Cllr. Jallah Barbu will serve as the keynote speaker at the indoor program.
The National Flag, designed by a committee of Liberian women led by Mrs. Susannah Lewis in 1847, is regarded as a historic emblem of Africa’s first republic. It consists of eleven alternating red and white stripes representing the eleven signers of the Declaration of Independence, and a blue square with a single white star symbolizing Liberia as the first independent African state.
Flag Day activities will begin with a general rehearsal on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Barclay Training Center. On Monday, August 25, a parade featuring 30 schools and youth groups will march from the Barclay Training Center through UN Drive to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion. The official program, beginning at 10:00 a.m., will include a pass-in-review before President Boakai, Vice President Jeremiah Koung, members of the 55th Legislature, and other dignitaries. President Boakai is expected to deliver a special Flag Day message during the ceremony.
