Liberia: President Boakai Inaugurates Liberia’s First National Resource Center for Persons with Disabilities

He called on society to treat them with dignity and respect, irrespective of their circumstances.

Monrovia — President Joseph Boakai recently officiated the groundbreaking ceremony for Liberia’s first national resource center dedicated to persons with disabilities in Brewerville, Kpeko Town.

This event represents a significant step in the government’s ongoing commitment to inclusivity and advancing the rights of the disabled community.

In his address, President Boakai underscored the importance of recognizing the inherent humanity of individuals with disabilities. He called on society to treat them with dignity and respect, irrespective of their circumstances.

“We must regard those with disabilities as our equals, deserving of respect and support,” he stated. He also acknowledged the evolving nature of disability, stressing that today’s challenges may not be permanent. “While we cannot predict the future, we must be ready to face these challenges with resilience,” he added.

The President also reflected on a recent visit to the Christian Association of the Blind, where he expressed his deep concern over the substandard living conditions many disabled individuals are subjected to.

“What we saw was heartbreaking; the conditions were inhumane, akin to living like animals. We are taking immediate steps to renovate those facilities and improve the living standards,” he revealed.

During his speech, President Boakai issued a strong warning to government officials regarding the misuse of public resources. “Any official found misappropriating government property for personal gain will face severe consequences,” he stated.

He further called for greater collaboration with law enforcement, lawmakers, and senators, urging them to ensure national resources benefit all citizens equitably. “It is distressing to see community schools lacking basic facilities such as seating and functional toilets. This is absolutely unacceptable,” he asserted.

President Boakai also reaffirmed his government’s commitment to infrastructure development, stressing that all community roads, no matter their current condition, must be made accessible to all Liberians. “We are dedicated to channeling resources where they are most needed. Our mission is to pave the way forward, not dwell on despair,” he emphasized.

The President extended his gratitude to partners who have supported the government’s initiatives and specifically praised Second Lady Madam Stephenie Dahn Koung for her tireless efforts in advocating for the rights and welfare of individuals with disabilities.

The initiative, spearheaded by the Office of the Second Lady, has secured $5 million for the construction of 200 housing units, a high school for Group of 77 students, and a specialized healthcare facility.
